Welcome to the Tourist Route by the sea of Puerto Real! A fascinating experience that invites you to immerse yourself in the coastal beauty of this enchanting corner, on a tour along the most emblematic places of the coast.
We begin our walk on the beach of the Cachucha, an extension of fine sand in the heart of the town center. From this point, admire the Bay of Cadiz and the remains of the Arsenal de la Carraca in San Fernando. We advance towards the fortification of the Media Luneta and its pier.
It is a quarry pier made of ashlars of ostiera stone from the quarries of the town with port destination that maintains facilities to be used as a fortification, in this case with lunettes that were equipped with artillery in times of war.
Recent studies affirm that this pier must have been built in the middle of the 18th century, with the military engineer Ignacio Sala, then a resident of Puerto Real, participating in its construction as director of the works, possibly following a design by the military engineer Jorge Próspero de Verboom.
In 1805 it would be reformed by the architect Torcuato Benjumeda and during the occupation of Puerto Real by the Napoleonic troops (1810-1812) the pier was equipped with artillery.
The current preserved length is 113 meters, and the width is 17 meters in the wharf area; in the central area there were two semicircular lunettes (Media Luneta) intended for a possible fortification of the wharf in a punctual way. One of the lunettes was buried during the filling of the area in the middle of the 20th century.
The other is still preserved, the so-called half lunette of the pier, a semicircular construction of about 13 meters in radius with a continuous parapet.
La Cachucha Beach
The origin of the name comes from casucha, since in the 1950s the area was occupied by small houses that served the fishermen of the area to store their gear. Another possibility is that it was named after the boats that were traditionally moored there, small boats called “cachuchos”.
Fortified Historic Pier
It is a quarry pier made of ashlars of ostiera stone from the quarries of the town with port destination that maintains facilities to be used as a fortification, in this case with lunettes that were equipped with artillery in times of war.
El Trocadero Yacht Club
The Club Nautico El Trocadero was established in 1975 as the Nautical Section of the Club Polideportivo Virgen del Carmen, inspired by the famous battle of El Trocadero. Located in the historic pier of Puerto Real, next to the promenade, it is a privileged enclave in the Bay of Cadiz. Its main objective is to promote sailing and has organized events such as the Almirante Cervera Optimist Summer Trophy, consolidating itself as an outstanding institution in the national nautical panorama.
